Tips on winterizing your pool before it's too late

Tips on winterizing your pool before its too late - Image 1It's that time of year again. Thought the days have been hot here in areas like Pasadena, Covina, and throughout southern California, there have been fewer and fewer people in public and privately owned pools since fall began. If you're new to winterizing your backyard pool, or simply need a refresher, here are a few tips to getting it done so that it will be hassle free come summer.

First, be sure that the pool and skimmer drains are free of debris like leaves, bugs, and other items. Use a net to help scoop out anything you may find. Use a water test kit to balance the Ph levels of the water. Even though no one will be swimming in it, the water should be balanced before it's covered for the season. Add a winterization chemical to it now if you so choose.

Don't add any chlorine floaters or other chemical floating treatments as they could damage your pool equipment over time. If you already have tablets in your pool, run the filters until they dissolve completely. Follow the directions of any chemical you put in your pool. If it requires the filter to be running, do so.  Though it's rare here in California, be sure to protect your pool from freeze risk as well.

Once you are allowed to turn off your pump and filter, disconnect them, making sure all water is drained from the pump. Remove teh drain plugs as well. Once this is done, turn it on for a second or two to be sure all water has been removed. If you have a heater, drain it and make sure there is no water left inside.Remove all skimmer baskets and return jet fittings, if something breaks, you can always replace it once spring arrives.

Be sure all filter hoses are cleaned as well. Blow out any main drain lines and return plumbing as well as opening the bottom of the filter to let out any water from the outlet. Close the multi-port valve or turn it to 'winter'.  Finally, place a light flotation device in the center of your pool to help prevent any freezing. Once you spread the cover over the pool, after making sure there are no rips or tears, make sure it's anchored appropriately against winter wind and other weather.

This would be a good time to check for trip hazards or any concrete slabs that are not level. Call Saber for a free inspection of your pool deck and get an estimate on what it will take to have your pool up and running at 100% next year! Visit www.saberfoundations.com for more information.
