HILLSIDE HOMES
Hillside homes with foundation failure pose some interesting and complex challenges. Not only does the foundation need to be supported (and possibly lifted) vertically, but also, the foundation needs to be held back into the slope to prevent horizontal movement as the top soil slips downward.
A combination of RESISTANCE and HELICAL piers provide a solution that addresses both of these issues. Resistance piers are installed in the typical fashion, straight down do load bearing stratum and the foundation is supported or lifted back into place. Then, at each resistance pier placement, a helical pier is turned into the hill, deep through the slipping top soil, and into the thick and sturdy stratum inside the hill. Both piers are connected to a single bracket which is fastened to the bottom of the foundation. The resistance pier provided vertical support and the helical pier holds the foundation into the hill.
